Ewing Thomas, Sr.

Ewing J. Thomas, Sr., was born in Oliver, PA to Ewing Paul and Mary Ellen Edwards-Thomas. He was raised in Pennsylvania and married Ida Ann Montgomery on 16 November 1946. This union was blessed with three children: Ewing J. Thomas, Jr., Leslie A. Thomas, and Victoria A. Thomas (who preceded him in death on 30 November 1999).

Ewing was first and foremost a military man. Ewing retired from the U.S. Army as a Master Sergeant after 30 years of service. His military service included being a Paratrooper (Jumpmaster) with the 82nd airborne Division. His combat service included World War II (landing at Normandy) and at least four tours of duty in Vietnam.

After retirement, Ewing Thomas continued to be active. He was a supervisor for Blue Plains, volunteered at Kimbrough Hospital and was a faithful Usher at the Main Post Chapel.

Ewing Thomas was a member of the Aesop Robinson Golf Association. In 1999, he was given a plaque for being the oldest [living member]. He was a member of the American Legion William Hickman Post 762 in Connellsville, PA. He was also a Mason with Maceo Boston #145, IH Clayborn Conciliatory jurisdiction, and 33rd Degree Mason.

Ewing Thomas is survived by a devoted wife, Mrs. Ida Ann Thomas, Ewing Thomas, Jr. (Rose Mary) of Savannah, GA., Leslie A. Thomas (Marlene) of Uniontown, PA., six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, several cousins, nieces, nephews, and a host of devoted friends.

Ewing Thomas was a devoted member of the Main Post Chapel, an extremely kind, dependable Christian husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who always thought of others before himself. He was a man of his word and will be missed by all.
