The Aesop Robinson Golf Association's assistance with the Junior Golf Program began July 7, 1997 under the direction of Fred Huevel, head Golf Pro at The Courses of Fort Meade, Maryland. It was heralded by an unprecedented interest in the sport of golf. That interest was without a doubt generated by the skyrocketing emergence of the then young golf phenomena - Tiger Woods! More than 70 junior hopefuls, ranging in age from eight to 17, registered for the program. See Youth Program Teaches the Fundamentals of Golf for additional details!
The Junior Golf Program consists of four weeks of golf activity. We assist in providing structured practice, putting techniques, short game skills, bunker play, golf course management, skill testing, snacks, beverages, range balls and golf course experience. Our goals are to introduce the tradition of golf, teach basic golf skills and rules, and provide insight into the mental aspects of the game through on-course familiarization.
While not exhaustive, the following instruction is typical of the program:
- Registration with introduction of staff and volunteers
- Safety and Personal Conduct
- Range Demonstrations
- Golf Etiquette Videos
- Overview/demonstration of swing fundamentals, equipment, shot-making drills and physical preparation (demonstrated by The Courses staff)
- Grip, Stance, Aim & Swing Drills
- Group Practice (Beginners/Intermediate/Advanced)
- Timed Practice Rotations
- Skill/Proficiency Training
- Awards/Presentations
All activities are conducted under the supervision of both The Courses professional staff and ARGA volunteers. The presence of ARGA volunteers in the Junior Golf Program allows Mr. Huevel and his staff to provide in-depth instruction in all phases of the program. Youngsters who need additional coaching or personalized training will receive the necessary attention. ARGA volunteers also provide continuation training and the opportunity to play supervised golf on four weekends after the end of the program.
Over the years, the composition of the Aesop Robinson Golf Association has exhibited great diversity. Our members include active duty and retired military personnel, government employees, professionals, clerics, administrators and law enforcement personnel. We have participated in military activities ranging from World War II to the Gulf War. We have worn black, red, and green berets and participated in life with distinction. Despite all of this, we are bound by one common thread -- pursuit of the dimpled white ball! |
